The ‘CYPRUS INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL’ is an annual tradition. This year marks its eighteenth edition, taking place at the Melina Mercouri Theater in Old Nicosia from November 1st to 4th. The prestigious Golden Aphrodite Awards Ceremony will be held on November 5th at the Pallas Cinema-Theatre, hosted by actor Mario Sarpetsa (Gi tis Elias TV show) and Anna Heraclous (TV VERGINA). More than1000 spectators and artists are expected to attend the Festival live and online.
In honor of its inaugural Artistic Director, the Production Designer of John Cassavetes’ films, Phaedon Papamichael, and his son, Phaedon Papamichael Jr., a Director of Photography (Indiana Jones 2023), and a multiple-time Oscar nominee, the Festival has established the Technical Award “Phedon Papamichael Award” given for the Best Production and/or Best Cinematography in a film participating in the Festival.
Parallel events include the participation of screenwriter Scott Simpson in the CYIFF Scriptwriting Workshop, “Bridging the Second Act,” as well as special screenings of the documentary film about the Cypriot immigrant to Australia, Harry Vatiliotis, titled “The Last Violin” and directed by Carla Thackrah. The virtuoso violinist Romano Crivici, will perform live. Cypriot craftsmen. will conduct a violin-making workshop. The customary CinemaLab Aphrodite workshop – “Make Your Own Film at the Aphrodite Cinematic Workshop” – will produce a short film to be showcased at the Festival’s closing ceremony.
The Festival promotes Cypriot cinema, the history of Cyprus and Greek-Cypriot directors living abroad through film categories such as “Nostimon Imar” and “Award-Winning Cypriot Directors”.
The Festival is a new cinematic destination, serving as a significant meeting point for Greek-Cypriot and international artists.
A distinguished international panel, including Danish director Sofie Vibeke Muasya, actor and producer Valentin Nonyela (Casino Royale), American director and producer Victoria Greene, Indian producer Vivek Singhania, American producer George F. Roberson (Venice Festival Queer Lion for Jose), and journalist Bejay Browne, as well as others, will serve as judges for the “Golden Aphrodite Award”.
CYIFF is a charitable organization relying primarily on volunteers and consists of a team of Cypriot and Greek professionals in the fields of culture and art, as well as film producers and international cinema consultants. The Festival holds the European quality certification EFFE Label, “Europe for Festivals, Festivals for Europe”, and has operated annually with consistency and artistic responsibility since 2006.
