CWEP – Cyprus Women Environmental Peacemakers: Growing Bridges, Planting Peace
Empowering Women, Healing Divides, and Cultivating Peace through Nature
Nicosia, Cyprus — 18 September 2025
It is our great honor to invite you to participate in a powerful new initiative taking place this September in Cyprus: the Cyprus Women Environmental Peacemakers (CWEP) project, with a grant of €7,000, under the Small Grants Programme of PLACE in Cyprus. The Small Grants Programme of PLACE in Cyprus Project is funded by the European Union under the Aid Programme for the Turkish Cypriot community.
The CWEP initiative is co-organized by Women in Film and Television – Cyprus and the Environmental Society of Lefka Association. It aims to contribute to lasting reconciliation by combining symbolic environmental action with political advocacy and intercultural dialogue. CWEP aims to empower women as vital agents of peacebuilding and environmental sustainability.
The CWEP project includes:

- A two-day conference in Nicosia (22–23 September), featuring speakers (environmentalists, academics, activists) from both communities and abroad.
- Bicommunal Symbolic Tree Planting at Pyla UN Office Buffer Zone (19 September, 12noon) A symbolic planting of one olive tree—symbolizing remembrance, regeneration, peace, and unity through nature and honoring the remaining missing persons from both communities, Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots.
- The presentation of a Policy Paper to the Bi-Communal Technical Committees on Gender, on Education, and on Environment, and to the Cypriot members of the European Parliament to submit it to the Relevant European Parliament Committees (FEMM, CULT, AGRI, DROI).
- Video with highlights from the event
CWEP is inspired by UN Security Council Resolution 1325, which highlights the importance of women in peacebuilding processes. The project’s outcome includes a Policy Paper with actionable recommendations and a short highlights video documenting the movement’s story and vision.

This is more than symbolic—this is a statement about how grassroots efforts, especially by women, can transform conflict into cooperation,” say Petra Terzi, President and founder of Women in Film and Television – Cyprus, and Munevver Ebedi, President, Environmental Society of Lefka Association.
